Why a heat pump to heat your pool?

A heat pump pool heater uses nature’s ‘free heat’ from the air to heat your pool water. It applies the same principle used in refrigerators and air conditioners with technology adapted to pools and spas. A heat pump pool heater can even pull residual heat from cool air. Electricity is only needed to transfer the heat, not to create it! It is significantly less expensive than gas or electric heating. How efficient is it?

The efficiency of the heat pump is measured by the coefficient of performance (C.O.P.) - i.e. the ratio of energy input to energy output. This is dependant on the ambient air temperature and the temperature of the water of the swimming pool. For every unit of electricity Aquatemp heat pump pool heater uses, it produces 5 to 6 units of heat that is extracted from the ambient air.


What is the operating cost?

Compared to other types of heating equipment, with the exception of of solar heaters, which only heats when the sun is present, the Aquatemp heat pump pool heater is very economical. Two types of energy sources are utilized to produce the required heat output, the heat from the ambient air and electrical power used to run the compressor and fan motor.


How is the Aquatemp heat pump pool heater controlled?

It is controlled by the programmable electronic thermostat on the control panel which has an accurate digital temperature and a water flow switch that senses when the pool pump is switched on.


Does my pool pump need to run for the Aquatemp heat pump pool heater to work?

Your Pool Pump MUST BE RUNNING ! The Aquatemp heat pump pool heater needs WATER FLOW to tranfer the HEAT !!


Will the Aquatemp heat pump pool heater work all the time?

No! At the beginning of the season, you set the electronic programmable thermostat to the desired temperature and allow the unit to run continuosly for approximately 96 hours. Once the set temperature is reached the unit will switch off. It will then monitor the swimming pool water temperature and only start the unit when needed i.e. the pool water temperature drops below the set temperature.

Please bear in mind that cold weather will drastically add to your pool's heat loss. When that occurs you'll need to make sure that the pool pump runs long enough each day to enable your Aquatemp heat pump pool heater to DELIVER SUFFICIENT HEAT TO MAKE UP FOR THAT LOSS.


What size Aquatemp heat pump pool heater is required?

The size of a heat pump pool heater is based on the size of your swimming pools surface area and the volume of water in the pool. This together with the required temperature of the water will determine the size of the pool heater.


What is the lowest ambient air temperature at which the Aquatemp pool heater can work?

The Aquatemp defrost ¨D¨ models are fitted with a positive de-ice system that allows the unit to efficiently heat your swimming pool water at near zero degrees Celsius ambient air temperatures.


Why should a pool cover or solar blanked be used on the swimming pool?

As with all swimming pool heating systems, you are advised to use a pool cover when the swimming pool is not in use. This will keep evaporation, the greatest heat loss to a minimum and so reduce the overall pool heating costs and unwanted frustrations. A pool cover can cut total heat loss by 50% to 90%.


How far away from the pool can the Aquatemp heat pump pool heater be installed?

Normally, the pool pump and Aquatemp heat pump pool heater are installed close together and within 8 meters of the pool. The longer the distance from the pool, the more heat loss from the piping. Since most of the time the piping is buried, the heat loss is minimal for runs of up to 15 meters (15 meters to and from the pump = 30 meters total) unless the ground is wet or the water table is high. If heat loss to wet soil is a concern - ask your pool builder for advice in your area regarding insulating backfill materials available and/or permitted by your local building codes.


How much water will condense From the Aquatemp heat pump pool heater?




Since your Aquatemp heat pump pool heater cools down the air, water may condense on the fins of the evaporator. If the relative humidity is very high, this could be as much as several litres an hour. The water will run down the fins into the base pan and drain out through the condensation drain hole.

Many people have mistaken the condensation for a water leak inside the Aquatemp heat pump pool heater.

TIP: A QUICK WAY TO VERIFY THAT WATER COMING FROM THE BASEPAN IS CONDENSATION and not a plumbing leak - FEEL THE DRAIN WATER - if it's much colder than the pool water, then it's condensation. Alternatively - TEST THE DRAIN WATER FOR CHLORINE - if there is no chlorine present, then it's condensation.


Why use pure titanium tubing for the Aquatemp heat exchangers?

The chemicals used to treat swimming pool water (i.e. chlorine and hydrochloric acid) can be extremely corrosive. The heat exchangers on all Aquatemp heat pump pool heaters are manufactured from pure titanium tubing which will not be corroded by swimming pool water.

Only heat exchangers made from commercially pure titanium tubing are virtually immune to all chemical corrosion.


Will the Aquatemp heat pump pool heater need more freon?

The Aquatemp heat pump pool heater has a sealed refrigeration system that is filled with a refrigerant called ¨freon¨. The factory charge of refrigerant should last for the life of the unit. Freon is very stable gas and should not degrade or breakdown, even under severe operating conditions. If your unit needs freon, then it has a leak which must be located and repaired before adding more freon or the problem will not be resolved. Fortunately, freon leaks are very uncommon and usually occur due to shipping damage.
